Located in northwestern North Carolina in the High Country Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian State University is an internationally recognized comprehensive, public, university commonly referred to as App State, ASU or App. The sixth largest in the University of North Carolina system, ASU maintains an impressive student/faculty ratio of 17:1 with an average class size of 24. Appalachian offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate major programs from five colleges.

ASU Mountaineers take inspiration from the Boone legend, Daniel Boone. A sculpture of Daniel Boone is located on campus to commemorate the name of the town and the mascot of ASU. At 3,333 feet above sea level, Appalachian State University has one of the highest elevations of any university in the United States east of the Mississippi River, encompassing 1,300 acres. The main campus is comprised of 21 residence halls, four dining facilities, 19 academic buildings and 11 recreation facilities over 410 acres. Appalachian State is a very environmentally conscious school and offers wonderful amenities to the community, including the George M. Holmes Convocation Center, Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, Farthing Auditorium and Belk Library with more than 37,000 volumes.
