Beech Mountain offers a

drawn to Ski Beech’s 15
slopes, 10 lifts, ice
skating rink, and Alpine
Village, while hikers
delight in the 20 miles
of trails. The quaint
Alpine Village was
designed to mimic the
style of Swiss alpine
villages and you can
pick up a trail map and
information at the Beech
Mountain Chamber of
Commerce, Town Hall or
Fred’s General
Mercantile.
Originally enjoyed by
Cherokee Indians who
called the area “Klonteska,”
meaning pheasant,
because of its rich
hunting grounds, Beech
Mountain was first
inhabited by settlers in
the 1900’s who built
lumber camps and cabins
around Beech Mountain.
In 1930, the department
head of Industrial
Education at Lees-McCrae
was the first to
encourage modern skiing
on Beech Mountain by
teaching his students
how to ski. Soon, a
Skiing Zero Club had
formed at the college
and to this day Beech
Mountain is known for
its amazing ski resort.
Dr. Thomas Brigham, who
first acquired land for
the future
Ski Beech Resort,
commented that Beech
Mountain was an
exceptional location for
skiing “between the
eastern piedmont of the
Carolinas and the
western piedmont of
Tennessee, where the
peaks are highest and
the mountain ranges
narrowest.” Brigham sold
the land to the Robbins
brother in 1962 and the
three men worked
together to transform
Beech Mountain into a
bustling ski resort.

Town of Beech
Mountain
features Beach
Mountain Golf,
Beech
Mountain Club, lake
enjoyment at Buckeye
Lake and Coffey Lake,
Buckeye Recreational
Center, and seasonal
festivals, including the
ever popular
Beech
Mountain Oz Festival.
