MusicFest N' Sugar Grove at Cove Creek School
Date: 7/9 - 7/10

A small but wonderful event in its 13th year draws a big crowd and a wonderful lineup of music. This year’s event has four headliners, with Doc Watson as one of the main attractions.

Watson will play Saturday from 9:15 to 10:30 p.m. on the main stage.

The event used to be named for the Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitar-picker from Deep Gap, but changed its name years ago.

“Doc Watson’s name alone draws a crowd,” Edwards said.

Last year, the event sold out and this year’s lineup is just as good.

Along with Watson, the other headliners are the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Kruger Brothers and Hay Sugar.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a trio of musicians that play old-time string music, and were formed after the Black Banjo Gathering (now in Boone) held in 2005 in Asheville. Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson mix up what they play, alternating between the banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, snare drum, bones, jug and kazoo.

The Kruger Brothers are a trio made up of brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger, who were born and raised in Switzerland, and bassist Joel Landsburg. They've played internationally for years, bringing an acoustic sound that blends together classical European and American influences.

Hay Sugar is a four-piece bluegrass-country group out of Asheville that mixes banjo, mandolin and three sweet-sounding voices.

Each group brings its own unique style of bluegrass and old-time music to the mountains for the family-friendly festival.

A lot of the groups could also be heard at the annual MerleFest in Wilkesboro, and Edwards said lots of fans of that event come to MusicFest N’ Sugar Grove.

“We get both [out of town folks and locals],” she said. “We also have people who call ahead every year and want their same seats.”

Along with the scheduled performers, there will be a songwriters’ showcase and musicians’ workshop. Money raised from the event will go to preserve the Cove Creek area in Watauga County.
