| Lees-McRae College: The Risks of Heroes; a Drama with Music and Dance... |
Date: 9/30 - 10/04
A chronicle of exciting and heart-warming events where ordinary people rose to accomplish extraordinary tasks. Irene Sendler, saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gladys Alward, a Missionary saved children during the war between China & Japan by taking them over the mountains to safety. A Darfur Translator, brought worldwide attention to what was happening in that country. The Girls of Afghanistan, even after suffering acid in their faces continued to go to school at great risk. The Risks of Heroes will look at these and other stories where heroes have risked their lives for others. This original work is authored and directed by Dr. Janet Barton Speer under the sponsorship of the Joseph and Frieda Ross Foundation. It kicks off the 2009-2010 Lees-McRae Performing Arts Season.

| Ghost Train Halloween Festival at Tweetsie Railroad |
Date: 10/2 - 10/02
Every Friday and Saturday, October 2 thru October 31. The cost is $26 per person. Advance tickets are required. Safe, scary fun for all ages. There will be the Ghost Train Ride, Haunted House, Halloween shows, 3-D Maze, Black Hole and trick-or-treating. Call 800-526-5740.

| APPLE JAM in North Wilkesboro |

Apple Jam is a musical event held at the corner of 10th and Main in downtown North Wilkesboro, the Friday evening preceeding the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. The music starts at 6 PM. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the music. Call 336-984-3022 for details.

| Beech Mountain's Autumn at Oz Party |

Always held on the first weekend in October, the top of Beech Mountain magically transforms into the Land of Oz . The setting is complete with all your favorite people and places from Frank Baum’s silver screen classic. All day at Beech Mountain on Saturday and Sunday, the public is invited to take a nostalgic stroll down the Yellow Brick Road and share memories of Oz with younger generations. Visitors park in a large meadow across from the Beech Mountain Town Hall on the Beech Mountain Parkway and walk or take a shuttle bus or hayride to the private gardenof Oz.
Guests tour Aunt Em and Uncle Henry's farm and meet Dorothy and friends along the Yellow Brick Road. There is a concession stand featuring new and old Oz trivia, a small petting zoo, a mini-Oz museum, mountain music, square dancers and face painting to add to the festive atmosphere. Admission is charged, but they will gladly take original yellow bricks or other park artifacts for trade. Proceeds go to pay for the party and help with restorations.
The tour takes from one and a half to two hours and Oz-esque costumes are encouraged. Strollers and wheelchairs will have to be parked.

| Blowing Rock's Art in the Park |

Art in the Park was created in 1962 by a handful of area artists and craftspeople to showcase local talent. 46 years after its start, Art in the Park is host to 100 artisans at each show. Some of the best local and regional artists and craftspeople showcase their handcrafted jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and more.
Art in the Park’s high standards and professional jury attract artisans from all over the Southeast to exhibit in a series of six shows, May through October. The quality of work exhibited draws thousands to the mountains each month.
Art in the Park is planned and administered by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber emphasizes the arts focus of this event. The town and area businesses are enthusiastic and participate with Art in the Park, and the public eagerly anticipates each season.

| Brushy Mountain Apple Festival |

From 8 AM to 5 PM in downtown North Wilkesboro, the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro are filled with more than 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, four different music stages consisting of bluegrass, country, folk, gospel and Appalachian heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival-goers.
Appalachian heritage crafts are highlighted, such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing and quilting.
Let us not forget the apples, apples, and apples. Local apple growers set up throughout the festival selling their apples, apple cider and dried apples. After all, this festival also pays tribute to the fruit grown and harvested each fall by apple orchardists from Northwestern North Carolina.

| Roan Mountain State Park Chili Cook-Off |
