Fred's General
Mercantile
 Opened in 1979, Fred's
General Mercantile has
since become a symbol of
Beech Mountain life.
Located atop
Beech
Mountain North Carolina, Fred and
Margie Pfohl started
the store and lived
upstairs, until
recently, to closely
manage both family and
customers. The result,
almost 30 years later, is
a shop that offers it
all and is central to
the wonderful allure of
Beech Mountain. At
Fred's you will find
everything from
groceries, to hiking
boots, fishing licenses,
fishing gear, and ski
rentals. Fred's mantra
is, "If we don't have
it, you don't need it!"
The store operates as an
old style country
general store where
everyone is family. What
once began as a one
level shop offering
groceries, tee shirts
and hardware, Fred's
Mercantile now includes
a ski shop, toy shop,
and deli.
The Backside Deli sells
sandwiches, homemade
soups and salads,
pizzas, desserts, and all
sorts of beverages. Stop
by Fred's and have a
picnic basket made to
order or enjoy a carry-out pizza. Among other
items carried, the Wild
Bird Supply line is
devoted to persons
interested in feeding,
housing, attracting and
learning about wild
birds. During Christmas,
Fred's Mercantile sells
24" Christmas wreaths
made from Beech Mountain
Fraser fir and delivered
via U.P.S. The clothing
section features
Columbia Sportswear, Woolrich, Carhartt, Alps
and Merrell among other
clothing brands carried
to keep the whole family
warm and equipped for
all Beech Mountain
activities. The grocery
store now carries
locally grown fruits and
vegetables, fresh meats
and poultry, homemade
breads and a variety of
domestic beers and
wines. If its
collectibles and nick-nacks
you are looking for,
Fred's Mercantile
carries Dept. 56 Snow
Village and Snowbabies,
and Swiss Army Knives.

Fred's offers to ship
you almost anything in
stock.
