Lees McRae - Lees McRae Summer Theater

Lees-McRae College Summer Theatre

Culture and the performing arts are a large part of the Banner Elk NC community. The Lees-McRae Summer Theatre offers wonderful plays throughout the summer season that locals and visitors alike enjoy. Since July 1985, the Lees-McRae Summer Theatre has been guided by Janet Barton Speer in collaboration with the former Academic Dean, Jim Stonesifer, and previous College President, Dr. H.C. Evans. The Lees-McRae Summer Theatre has remained a prominent symbol of performing arts in the region.

Held in Hayes Auditorium, each performance is uniquely staged and boasts plenty of amenities and accommodations for large audiences. In fact, over 3,403 visitors attended the first season of the Lees-McRae Summer Theatre program and to date, attendance reaches 6,000 visitors per season. Little has changed over the decades and Dr. Barton Speer continues to lead the staff, which now totals to over 100 paid actors; however the Lees McRae Summer Theatre has grown from being a small, community minded endeavor, to a greater profitable attraction in the High Country.
