Mast General Store
The Mast General Store
and Mast Store Annex are
two of Valle Crucis’
most famous attractions
and a must-stop for many
visitors to the
area. The historic, old
store is a great place
to tour, and the famous
Candy Barrel is every

 The
Mast General Store was
built in 1882 by Henry
Taylor and was
opened in 1883. Henry
operated a much smaller
store across the road
before
deciding to build a
grand, new structure. In
1897, half of the store
was sold to W.W.
Mast, a
well known pioneer
settler that had come to
the valley.
From this time until
1913, the store was
called Taylor and Mast
General Store. In 1913,
the remaining portion of
the store was purchased
from Taylor and sold to
W.W. Mast and from then
on it became known as
the Mast General Store.
For the next 60 years,
the store was owned and
managed by the Mast
Family.
During this early period,
the store carried all of
the items that the
Mast's neighbors and
pioneer friends might
need. You could buy
everything from plows
and farm equipment to
cloth, cradles and
caskets. A
popular community saying
during this time was “If
you can’t buy it here,
you don’t need it”. Mast
extended credit to all
who needed it in the
community and often,
payments were made with
barters or trade.
Today, John and Faye
Cooper own and manage
the Mast Store in Valle
Crucis after purchasing
it in 1980. The couple
restored and reopened
Mast General Store and
the store has again regained
its reputation as “the
place that has
everything”. The Mast
operation experiences
growing popularity and
has expanded to include several new stores. The Annex
was opened in 1982, the
Old Boone Mercantile was
opened in 1988, and the
little Red Schoolhouse
opened in 1989. This
followed with several
Mast store’s opening up
in Waynesville (1991),
Hendersonville (1995)
and a store in Asheville
(1999). Mast Stores have
also opened up outside
of North Carolina and
include a store in
Greenville (2003) and
Knoxville TN (2006)
