Roan Mountain State
Park

Spend time exploring the
beautiful grassy balds
and hardwood forests
around Northeast
Tennessee near the
Tennessee and North
Carolina border. This
area is home to some
truly spectacular views
and Roan Mountain State
Park. Roan Mountain
State Park is set among
beautiful and pristinely
preserved lands. The
park contains over 2,006
acres and features
excellent views of the
6,285-foot
Roan Mountain peak.
Here visitors come to
enjoy a variety of
outdoor activities like
hiking, backpacking,
camping, cross country
skiing, fishing, and a
heated outdoor swimming
pool that is open from
Memorial Day to
mid-August. A portion of
the park hosts
the Appalachian Trail,
making for a popular AT
access point. Other Roan Mountain
State Park attractions
include the Millers
homestead, Carver's Gap
(only 8 miles away) and
the annual event, the
Roan Mountain
Rhododendron Festival
which takes place each
June. Hikers can choose from more than 12 miles
of hiking trails and
mountain bikers
appreciate this area for
its more than 2 miles of
maintained biking
trails. Most of the
trails range in
difficulty with certain
points providing more
challenges than others;
try out the section of
the Appalachian Trail
that runs through the
park, or enjoy a brisk
hike on the Rhododendron
Gardens Trail or the
Roan High Bluff Trail.
Near
Roan Mountain State Park
is Carver's Gap, a popular area
along the Roan Mountain
ridge line that offers
long range views of the
surrounding mountain
peaks. Grassy bald areas
and flat lands dominate
the landscape of
Carver's Gap and create
some of the best spots
for a picnic; however,
fog is sometimes a
limiting factor as it
typically rests here
even on sunny days. The fog is
just one reason why this
portion of the Blue
Ridge Mountains is aptly
named the Great Smoky
Mountains, as it gives
the peaks a distinctly
smoky look.
