Roan Mountain TN

Rising to a peak of
6,285 feet along the
Tennessee and North
Carolina borders is a
natural wonderland known
as Roan Mountain. For
hundreds of years, Roan
Mountain has been a
popular vacation
destination. Roan
Mountain is home to
several unique and
exotic plant species and
features a
world-renowned
rhododendron grove. Roan
Mountain, like much of
the Appalachian region,
has a rich history.
Centuries ago this land
was explored by the
Spanish who were in
search of rare minerals.
The explorers found many
minerals including gold
in the mountain's
creeks. In the 1800s,
the legendary Cloudland
Hotel became the premier
hotel in the Blue Ridge
Mountains and
hundreds of visitors,
including, Elvis Presley,
stayed here.
Roan
Mountain is most famous
for its large,
rhododendron gardens
which are celebrated
each year during the
Roan Mountain Rhododendron
Festival. For more
than 62 years, in late June,
during the peak blooming
period, thousands of
visitors descend on Roan
Mountain to take
pictures and explore the
grassy balds atop the
mountain peak where the
rhododendron bushes
grow. The native Catawba
Rhododendrons are known
for their plump, round
appearance and gigantic
blooms. Each
Rhododendron bush can
boast over 100 clusters
of flowers and Roan
Mountain's Canadian
temperate climate zone
is the perfect
environment for these
floral displays.
