The Blowing Rock
Blowing Rock is the High
Country's oldest
attraction, drawing
visitors from around the
world since 1933. An
immense cliff rising
4,000 feet above sea
level and overhanging
Johns River Gorge, The
Blowing Rock is open
year-round and offers
visitors a view of a
lifetime, including
vistas of Hawksbill
Mountain, Table Rock,
Grandfather Mountain,
and Mount Mitchell. The
Blowing Rock is so
called because
northwesterly winds form
a flume of air in the
narrow gorge and valley
below, sweeping up onto
the rock and creating
a
perpetual wind. Ripley's
Believe-It-Or-Not even
drew a cartoon of
Blowing Rock NC,
reporting that it is
"the only place in the
world where snow falls
upside down."
 There is a charming
legend associated with
The Blowing Rock: A
Chickasaw maiden was
daydreaming on the rocky
ledge and spotted a
Cherokee brave in the
valley below. She shot
an arrow in his
direction to show her
attention and interest
in the brave and soon he
appeared at her wigwam.
The two became lovers
and wandered the
beautiful wilderness,
playing beside crystal
streams in green
meadows. One day, the
sky reddened and the
brave and maiden went to
The Blowing Rock North
Carolina. The brave
interpreted the red sky
to be a sign of trouble
requiring his return to
the Cherokee tribe. Torn
by his love for the
maiden and duty to his
tribe, the brave cast
himself over the craggy
cliff in despair. The
maiden was struck with
grief and sadness until
one day, the Great
Spirit answered her
prayers and a reddened
sky produced a gust of
wind and her lover was
blown back onto The
Blowing Rock and into
her arms. The wind
continues to blow on
Blowing Rock NC, drawing
visitors from around the
world to behold the
incredible vista of the
Blue Ridge Mountains.
