Valle Crucis
Conference Center

Valle Crucis has a long
and unique history. The
area
was first settled by
Episcopal settlers who
were seeking peace,
quiet, and the freedom to
practice their religion. In 1840, a
botanist from New York
visited the area and was
led to visit and
correspond with Bishop
Ives, the then head
Diocese of North
Carolina. Bishop Ives
was so intrigued by his
conversations with the
New York botanist that
he visited Valle Crucis
and promised to provide
a leader and a
missionary for the
people of the area.
During his trip, Bishop
Ives also noticed the
interesting pattern of
the area's rivers and
observed the formation
of St. Andrew's cross
where two streams met.
He then began calling
the area the Vale of the
Cross, thus the town
forever bore this apt
name. In
1842, Bishop Ives sent
Rev. Henry Prout and he
began ministering to the
settlers in the area.
Over several years,
Bishop Ives began buying
various lands in Valle
Crucis with a goal in
mind of creating a
monastic order in this
holy area. The monastic
order lasted for only a
short time as many in
the Anglican Church felt
the orders were too
"Roman", however, the
Episcopal tradition and
heritage continued in
the area and still plays
a prominent role today.
Several churches were
established and of
course, the Old Mission
School educated the
local
children.
The
Valle Crucis Conference
Center is located at the
old site of the Old
Episcopal Mission and
school. Listed on the
Historic Registry, the
